McLean Volunteer Fire Department

Volunteer with Us!

The McLean Volunteer Fire Department includes dozens of volunteers from diverse communities across Northern Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C. who are committed to serving the residents of McLean and Fairfax County. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and work or study in a wide variety of careers. Together, we routinely provide the community with over 10,000 volunteer hours a year.

Before applying, please visit the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department’s Recruitment Section’s webpage and carefully review the eligibility requirements, the application process, and time commitment. We accept applications for both administrative and operational membership. Admin members assist the McLean VFD with administrative tasks such as community outreach, fundraising, and more. In addition to these tasks, operational members are also trained and volunteer in Fairfax County as EMTs, paramedics, and/or firefighters.

Please also review the list of requirements/expectations below. To be considered for operational membership you must be able to meet all of these requirements. Unfortunately, we cannot accept members who wish to volunteer for less than three consecutive years. This is due to the large amount of time, effort, and investment required to become a competent operational volunteer. To be an operational volunteer, you must:

  • Volunteer at least 20 hours per month (240 hours per year), including completion of mandatory refresher/recertification training. Initial trainings and ongoing refreshers are held weeknights and weekends at the Fire and Rescue Academy on West Ox Road in Fairfax;
  • Attend monthly membership meetings at McLean station on the third Monday of each month at 7pm (members must attend at least six-out-of-twelve meetings per year);
  • Attend two out of four “all-hands” events on weekends throughout the year;
  • Be a U.S. citizen or current legal resident with at least 24 months of U.S residency;
  • Be 18 years of age or older;
  • Successfully pass a background investigation;
  • Possess a valid U.S. driver’s license;
  • Provide a copy of your driving record;
  • Pass annual drug testing;
  • Pass an annual Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department physical exam; and
  • Volunteer for three consecutive years from the time you join.
