Requirements

We accept applications for both Administrative and Operational membership:

Administrative members assist the McLean VFD with administrative tasks such as community outreach, fundraising, and more. Applicants typically have a desired skillset or background and a specific plan of how they will contribute in order to be considered for administrative membership. Admin volunteers do not have to meet the same hours and training requirements as operational volunteers. Administrative member spots are limited and we are explicitly interested in individuals who have experience fundraising!

Operational members are trained and volunteer in Fairfax County as EMTs, Paramedics, and/or Firefighters, in addition to administrative tasks. Ops volunteers have the choice to train as EMT-Only, EMT and Firefighter, or even as a Paramedic. Our operational members must meet strict requirements to comply with Fairfax County operational policy, including hours and training requirements.

To be considered for membership you must be able to meet all of these requirements:

• Operational members must volunteer at least 60 hours per quarter (240 hours per year), including completion of mandatory refresher/recertification training. Initial trainings and ongoing refreshers are held weeknights and weekends at the Fire and Rescue Academy on West Ox Road in Fairfax (only required for ops members);
• Attend monthly membership meetings at McLean station on the third Monday of each month at 7pm (members must attend at least six-out-of-twelve meetings per year), a Zoom option is available;
• Attend two out of four “all-hands” events on weekends throughout the year;
• Be a U.S. citizen or current legal resident with at least 24 months of U.S residency;
• Be 18 years of age or older;
• Successfully pass a background investigation;
• Possess a valid U.S. driver’s license;
• Provide a copy of your driving record;
• Pass annual drug testing;
• Pass an annual Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department physical exam.
• Live within a reasonable distance of the station and be available year-round (no students that attend school out of the area).
• Operational members should consistently provide staffing for 2-4 shifts a month.
• Administrative members should consistently provide 5 hours of support toward committees a month.
• Volunteer for three consecutive years from the time you join.
